if you have bought an old domain then it is not much important to check the competition of the keyword the domain will automatically rank your website, but if the domain is new or specific keyword domain like affiliate marketing, etc then you have to do keyword researching.
Back links:
if you are working on short term products such as affiliate marketing products then you have to create backlinks of your website, but if you are working on long term website such as blog then you not have to create backlinks, just post the article on daily basis the website will automatically rank on the internet.
